Nauí was murdered at age 17- shot in the back by two men on a motorcycle. Every four days, an Indigenous Earth defender like Nauí is killed. Governments can help fix this by giving Indigenous Peoples legal title to their lands so they can protect our planet’s vital ecosystems without sacrificing their lives. Let’s be one million voices backing their call for land rights before world leaders gather at a key summit this month! Add your name now:

Dear friends,
The Earth’s greatest protectors are being murdered.

Nauí Brito de Jesus of the Pataxó people is one of more than 2,000 Indigenous defenders killed in recent years for standing up to ranchers, loggers and miners invading their land for profit.

This is a tragedy for us all. Indigenous Peoples keep our forests and rivers alive - but they can’t keep doing it if their lives and lands are under attack. Many Indigenous peoples don’t even legally own the lands that they have died for!

World leaders can help stop this cycle of death and destruction in just weeks at a critical summit in Colombia, by formally recognizing Indigenous territories as an essential part of the global plan to protect biodiversity.

Add your name to stand with the Earth defenders and demand global leaders commit to safeguarding Indigenous lands that heal our planet. When we are one million, we’ll deliver our voices straight to world leaders at the summit:
Science shows that Indigenous Peoples are the most important guardians of biodiversity on the planet - but while they take care of almost half the Earth, they lack legal title to 80% of the land they safeguard.

This huge gap is driving biodiversity loss in the Amazon and around the world- and it leaves Indigenous People vulnerable to attacks, harassment and murder.

Governments can help fix this by giving Indigenous Peoples legal title to their territories - discouraging poachers, drillers, miners and giving Indigenous People a path to defending biodiversity that doesn’t cost them their lives.

We have a chance to make this happen at the UN Biodiversity Summit in Colombia, by pushing leaders to legally recognize and account for Indigenous territories in their efforts to save our planet’s remaining biodiversity.

Indigenous groups are fighting hard to make this happen - add your name to stand with them now!
Avaaz has long stood with Indigenous peoples risking their lives and safety to protect the forests that sustain us all- from Peru to Tanzania. We cannot stay silent as long as they continue to be murdered for defending the Earth. Let’s make this summit in Colombia a turning point for Earth defenders and the ecosystems they have fought so hard to protect.

With hope and determination,
Liliana, Laura, Nell, Miguel, Luciana, Dudu, Raul, Edda and the rest of the Avaaz team
